Poured concrete steps with my dad back in 2003 and still remember the way he troweled the edges smooth like it was yesterday

We mixed 14 bags by hand in a rented mixer outside Detroit, and he showed me how a little water on the surface before finishing keeps it from cracking, so has anyone picked up a trick from a family member that you still use today?

Troweled the edges smooth" - man, that line hit me right in the feels. My old man showed me how to use a wet sponge on concrete instead of overworking it with a trowel, and I still do that to this day for little projects around my own house. The funny part is I always mess up the timing and end up with a weird finish where it's too rough in some spots and too smooth in others. I think that's just my signature move at this point - the "oops I forgot to set a timer" special.

Read somewhere that concrete work is all about patience and I clearly skipped that lesson haha.
