Bought a "gaming" laptop 3 years ago for $800. Now it takes 5 minutes just to open Chrome.

Look at how you actually treat that laptop though. Most people treat a gaming laptop like a budget desktop replacement and then get surprised when it slows down after years of being shoved in a backpack, running hot constantly, and never getting the fans cleaned out. An $800 gaming laptop from three years ago was already cutting corners on build quality and cooling, that's the trade off for the price. If you cracked it open and repasted the CPU, cleaned the dust out of the heat sink, and maybe swapped in an SSD if it doesn't have one already, it would probably run like new again. I mean, it's the same as buying a cheap used car and then complaining it needs an oil change and a new air filter after three years of driving it hard. The hardware didn't get worse, the thermal paste dried up and the vents got clogged.

Wait, people actually crack open their laptops and repaste the CPU themselves? That sounds like a huge pain and something I'd definitely screw up. I just figured you buy a laptop and use it til it dies, never thought about maintenance like that.
