I thought the whole 'network for your next job' thing was just talk until a guy I helped fix his car last year called me about an opening at his shop

That's exactly how I got my current job. A buddy from my old gym needed a hand moving some furniture, and six months later he put in a good word for me at the warehouse. It really does just happen when you're not even looking for it.

Totally agree with @nora_chen. My networking is so bad it's a joke. I once tried to connect with someone at a party and ended up talking to their dog for twenty minutes about the best brand of chew toys. The dog was a great listener, but not a lot of help with job leads. I'm pretty sure my best shot is accidentally helping a future CEO change a flat tire someday.
