Pro tip: My boss told me 'stop asking for permission to fix things you already know are broken'

I used to wait for a go-ahead on every little process improvement, but after that chat, I just started fixing the broken inventory system on my own. Anyone else have a boss comment that finally got you moving?

Honestly, that "stop asking for permission" advice sounds like a fast track to getting in trouble where I work. Fixing a whole inventory system on your own could really mess up other people's processes without them knowing. Some bosses say one thing but then get mad when you actually change things without a paper trail. I've seen people get blamed for overstepping even when they were trying to help.

The original advice was more about small daily fixes, not overhauling entire systems. It's about fixing a broken spreadsheet formula that everyone uses, not redesigning the whole inventory software without telling anyone. The key is fixing things that are clearly broken and affect your own work, then showing the fix to your team. That's different from making big changes that impact other departments without a heads up.
