The old timer who called me out on my valve adjustment at a shop in Tulsa
I was doing valves on a 6.7 Cummins a few months back at Brown Diesel in Tulsa, and this retired guy named Walt watched me for like 5 minutes. He said I was going too fast and not feeling the pushrod drag right. I was sure I had it down, but next time I slowed way down and actually paid attention to the drag, and sure enough I caught two that were off. Has anyone else had an old timer give them a tip that totally changed their technique?

Honestly that pushrod drag thing is a game changer, but you gotta make sure you're doing it with the engine ice cold or you'll get false readings.

Learned that one the hard way. Did it on a hot engine once and thought I was a genius. Tightened everything up, felt great. Next morning started it up and sounded like a sewing machine full of rocks. Had to redo the whole thing. Now I wait until the block is cold enough to touch. Like ice cold. My hands hurt but at least my valvetrain doesn't.

Wait, what actually happens if you do it warm - false tight or false loose readings?
