Shoutout to the guy at the hardware store who saved my deck from total rot

I was convinced I could just sand and re-stain the whole thing, but he pointed out a soft spot near the ledger board and said 'That's not cosmetic, your framing is GONE.' Has anyone else had a hidden structural issue wreck a surface-level fix?

That's not a surface-level fix, it's a safety issue.

Exactly, calling it a surface-level fix downplays the safety risk. I read an article about how that kind of thinking leads to serious accidents.
