Tried to patch a hole in my drywall with spackle instead of a proper patch kit

Had a fist-sized hole in my bedroom wall from an old shelf. The choice was between buying a drywall patch kit for about $15 or just packing it full of spackle. I went with the spackle to save a trip to the store. It looked okay for a day, then it all cracked and fell out onto the floor. Has anyone fixed a mess like this without having to cut out a whole new piece of drywall?

Did you at least put some mesh tape or something behind the hole first? Spackle needs something to hold onto, it can't just bridge a big empty space. You might have to cut it clean now and use a real patch piece.

Oh man, that's the whole truth right there. I tried to just fill a big gap once and it all cracked and fell out after a week. You really do need to cut out a square, put a new piece of drywall in there, and tape the seams. Otherwise it's just spackle over nothing and it never holds.

Ever try that spray foam stuff for bigger gaps first?
