Update: I thought those magnetic parts trays were a gimmick until my buddy in Tucson swore by them.

He gave me one last month and I've used it every single day since, keeping bolts from rolling under the workbench. Now I'm wondering if I should buy a whole set or if there's a better system out there. What do you guys use to keep small parts organized while you're working?

My own system is just a bunch of old takeout containers, so you're already way ahead of me.

Take those containers and label them with a sharpie, it makes a huge difference. I started with "small screws" and "washers" but now I've got stuff like "TV bracket bits" and "bike brake parts". The clear sides help you see when you're running low on something. Just try not to stack them too high or the whole tower tips over.

My buddy in Denver still uses an old muffin tin for his nuts and bolts, and I give him endless grief for it. Those magnetic trays are a total game changer, especially when you're working on something with a hundred identical little screws. I went from one tray to having three different sizes in about a week because I kept needing more space. The only downside is when you pick one up wrong and send a cascade of metal parts across the floor. Have you looked at the ones with the little dividers yet?
