Warning: My attempt to build a floating shelf ended with a hole in the wall
My partner said 'you measured the studs wrong, it's all drywall anchors' after the whole thing ripped out. I bought a $40 stud finder the next day, anyone have a brand they trust?

Oh man, that's the worst sound, when it all just rips out. I read this whole article about how the cheaper stud finders can get thrown off by electrical wiring or pipes, giving you a false reading. That $40 range should get you something decent that actually works. I'd look for one with a deep scan mode, since that helps it see past the drywall to find the real wood. The basic ones just aren't worth the headache, you end up right back where you started.
