My deck railing gave way last week because I skipped the lag bolts

I built the whole thing three years ago in my backyard in Springfield and just used deck screws for the posts. Last Tuesday, my kid leaned on it and a whole section came loose. The inspector said I needed at least two 5/8 inch lag bolts per post into the house frame. Has anyone else had to go back and fix something like this after a few years?
