Pro tip: I started draping with cheap muslin from Joann's instead of my good fabric, and it saved my last project.

I was stuck on a sleeve pattern for a wool coat, so I cut the whole thing in muslin first and pinned it on my dress form. Has anyone else found a better material for quick draping tests?

Old bedsheets from the thrift store work even better. They're already broken in and drape more like real fabric.

That's such a good point. Those worn-in cotton sheets have way better flow than stiff new fabric. They hang right and don't look all crisp and fake. Found a faded floral one last month that made a perfect ghost costume, just the right amount of creepy. Total game changer for cheap costumes.

Totally agree with hall.robin about the worn-in sheets. That stiff new stuff just bunches up and looks like you're wearing a cardboard box. The thrift store trick is solid too, those sheets have already been through the wash a hundred times so they just fall right. My kid's ghost costume last year was an old plaid sheet and it was way creepier than anything from a bag. You just can't buy that kind of perfect, lazy drape.
