Shoutout to the fabric vendor at the Dallas market who showed me a hidden flaw in a bolt of silk...

He held it up to the light and pointed out a subtle weave inconsistency I would have missed, saving me from a ruined gown. Now I always bring a small LED light to check every yard before I buy... does anyone else have a simple trick for spotting fabric defects?

Bringing an LED light is smart, but honestly holding it up to any decent light source works just as well. The real trick is knowing what kind of flaw you're even looking for in different fabrics. A snag in jersey isn't the same as a slub in linen.

Watched my friend totally miss a pulled thread on a silk shirt because she was just looking for holes like in her jeans. She only spotted it later in direct sunlight, and it was super obvious. @nina_butler is right, you gotta know the fabric. Now she checks knits under a lamp and wovens near a window.
