Had to explain to my cousin why I can't just 'borrow' the company skid steer for his backyard project.

The phrase "borrow the company skid steer" is actually wild. That's not borrowing a stapler, that's major company property. You could get fired for that.

When violamiller said "that's not borrowing a stapler," it really clicked for me. I see this all the time where people act like company property is just shared stuff for anyone to use (like it's a community tool shed or something). They don't see the line between grabbing a pen and taking actual machinery, which is kind of scary. It's a total lack of sense for how much trouble that could cause, not just getting fired but maybe even legal issues. That mindset just shows how some folks don't get basic work rules at all.

Seriously, if the thing's just sitting there unused, it's not hurting anyone to borrow it for a weekend. Companies have bigger things to worry about than a quick backyard job. It's not like he's planning to sell the thing.
