Appreciation post: My old foreman told me to always double-check the fit-up before the root pass

Back in 2008 on a big tank job in Toledo, he said 'Pat, your eyes are the best gauge you got, trust them over the tack welds.' I thought he was just being extra careful, but a few months later I rushed a fit on some 2-inch thick plate and the whole joint pulled apart after the first bead. Cost us half a day to cut it out and start over. Anyone else have a simple piece of advice that saved your hide later on?

Rant: My whole imaging run got wrecked by a neighbor's security light

Last night I was finally getting a clear shot at the Orion Nebula after weeks of clouds. I had my scope set up in the backyard, got everything focused, and started a 3 hour run. About 45 minutes in, my neighbor across the fence turned on this new, super bright motion light that lit up my whole yard. It completely flooded my subs with orange light, ruining the whole batch. I had to pack it all in, super frustrating. Anyone know a good way to politely ask someone to maybe not use a floodlight at 2am?
