Blew a tire on the interstate last night and learned something stupid

My 2015 Civic had a slow leak I kept ignoring, then on I-285 around 9pm the sidewall just gave out... $180 for a tow truck and $110 for a used tire off some guy's Craigslist ad. Has anyone else had a perfectly good tire suddenly fail because you waited too long to patch a nail hole?

Learned that lesson on a 2002 Corolla. Had a nail in the tread for weeks, figured I'd get to it eventually. Blew out on the highway entrance ramp. Scared me enough that I bought a portable tire inflator and a patch kit for the trunk. Now I check pressure every time I get gas. Saved me twice since then.

Which brand of portable inflator did you go with? I've seen mixed reviews on the cheap ones and don't want to waste money on something that'll fail when I need it. Also, have you actually used the patch kit on a tire that wasn't fully flat, or is it more for peace of mind? Curious if the patch holds up long enough to get to a shop or if it's just a temporary fix.
