My $600 forklift repair bill because I ignored a weird noise for 2 weeks
I was loading pallets at the warehouse on Tuesday when the transmission finally seized up mid turn. Had to call a tech from Cleveland Industrial Repair, and he pointed at a loose bolt I could've tightened myself for free.

Oh man, that "weird noise" thing gets me every time. I read somewhere that most mechanics say if you catch a weird noise early, it's usually a $50 fix versus a $500 one if you wait. I swear, it's like our brains just automatically hit the snooze button on car or equipment problems until they explode. That loose bolt story sounds exactly like something my neighbor went through with his lawnmower, he ignored a rattle for a month and ended up needing a whole new engine. Hard lesson to learn (but we all seem to learn it the hard way, don't we?).

My buddy ignored a grinding sound in his truck's brakes for like three months, said it was just the weather or whatever. Turned out it was a seized caliper, ended up costing him $600 to replace pads, rotors, and that caliper. If he'd brought it in when it first started it would have been maybe $100 for the pads and a lube job on the caliper slides. Same thing with my old washing machine that started making a thumping noise during spin cycle, I figured it was just unbalanced loads. Nope, it was the drum bearings going out and that was basically a new machine. It's wild how our brains convince us that ignoring it will make it go away, but it never does.
