My kid asked me why we still pour iron the same way they did in his history book

He's 12, and we were looking at a picture of a medieval foundry in his school book. He pointed at the sand molds and said, 'Dad, that's just like your shop. Did they run out of new ideas?' It hit me hard because I've always been proud of the craft, the tradition. I told him it's about quality and skill, not being old. But later, I was running a pour for some custom machine bases, and I kept thinking about it. We use better sand and safety gear now, sure, but the core process of melting metal and pouring it into a shaped cavity is basically the same. Maybe he has a point. Are we too stuck in 'the way it's always been done' to see where real improvements could be made? What's one part of the job you think is actually ripe for a total change?
