My water heater in the Northeast Heights just gave out on me this morning

It was a 12-year-old unit and the bottom tank finally rusted through, flooding my utility closet. I had to shut off the main water and call a local plumber for an emergency replacement. Has anyone had a similar failure and know what brand might last longer in our hard water?

Had a water softener put in a few years back after my old heater started making that deep, sad groaning sound. The plumber showed me the anode rod he pulled out, looked like a piece of chewed-up licorice. Honestly, the brand didn't seem to matter much once the minerals ate through that part. The new unit is doing fine so far, but I'm just waiting for the next thing in the house to give up.

That's the real kicker, isn't it? The softener saves the heater, but then something else gets the wear. Did you notice any change in how other appliances ran after the install?

It's always something with these old houses, just a new thing to worry about.
