Wasted $200 on a weekend kayaking trip with a group I didn't know

I signed up for a guided kayak trip last summer thinking it'd be a cool way to meet people, but the group was all couples who ignored me and the guide just talked the whole time. Lost the money and spent 6 hours feeling awkward on the water. Has anyone else dropped cash on a group activity where you ended up totally alone?

Buddy of mine did the same thing with a paintball group. Showed up solo and got stuck with a team of twelve year olds who kept shooting him in the back. The rental gun jammed every other shot and the ref barely looked his way. He spent most of the day hiding behind barrels while the birthday party kids screamed orders at him. Drove an hour each way for that.

I get what you're saying but honestly I think your buddy went in with the wrong mindset. Showing up solo to a paintball group especially one that's mostly rental gear is basically asking for a bad time. Those birthday party setups are chaos by design and the refs are usually just there to keep kids from shooting each other in the face. If he wanted a real experience he should have looked for a local speedball league or a group that plays woodsball on private land. Those places usually have better gear and older players who actually know what they're doing. The hour drive stings but that's on him for not scoping the place out first.
