Trying to explain the plot of Neon Genesis Evangelion to my dad

I figured it would take maybe 20 minutes, but we ended up talking for over two hours about the angels, the human instrumentality project, and why Shinji is like that. I still don't think he gets it. Has anyone else had a simple anime talk spiral into a full-on lecture?

Yeah, that "full-on lecture" feeling is so real. Trying to explain any show with big ideas just opens a door you can't close. I feel you, leo_thomas2, Steins,Gate is another one of those where the more you talk, the deeper the confusion gets. Eva is basically built to make you overthink every single detail. You almost need a whiteboard.

Oh man, you tried to explain Eva? That's a deep hole to fall into. I once spent an hour trying to explain the timeline in Steins;Gate to my cousin and just made it worse.
