A customer at the hardware store in Bellingham asked me a question I couldn't answer.

They needed a specific type of pipe thread sealant for a marine engine, and I just pointed to the general plumbing aisle. After they left empty-handed, my manager showed me the three specialty products we actually stock for that. Do you think it's better to admit you don't know right away, or try to point someone in a general direction first?

Admit you don't know right away. Trying to point them somewhere general can waste their time and send them to the wrong spot. It's better to be honest and then go find the right answer together.

What's the worst outcome you've seen from someone faking it?

Wait you're telling me people actually try to fake it instead of just saying they don't know? @emery308 that's wild to me. I've had coworkers do that and it always ends up making the problem way bigger. Just seems like a huge waste of everyone's time.
