Tried to pick a 'light summer read' for our book club and it blew up in my face

Honestly, I suggested this breezy romance novel set on a beach, thinking it would be a nice break from our usual heavy stuff. We read it, and during the meeting, two members got into a huge fight about whether the main character was 'empowered' or just 'making terrible life choices.' It got so heated that Sarah from the group actually left the Zoom call early. I learned that there's no such thing as a 'safe' book choice when people bring their own stuff to it. Has your club ever had a chill book pick turn into a major drama?

Yeah, that "safe book choice" idea is a total myth. We picked a simple mystery once and spent an hour arguing if the detective was just bad at his job or if the author messed up the clues. People get weirdly personal about fictional characters.

My aunt's knitting circle had a screaming match over a scarf pattern last year.

That story about the scarf pattern, @susan76, is wild but I totally believe it. Honestly, it makes me wonder what the real line is between talking about the book and just using it to fight about our own views. Like in your case, was the fight really about the character's choices, or was it a deeper clash over what being a strong woman even means? Tbh, I'd be nervous to suggest the next book now.
