I had to decide between a big promotion and moving back home to help my family.
Six months ago, my company offered me a lead role that came with a $25,000 raise. The same week, my mom in Cleveland fell and broke her hip. I had to choose between taking the job or quitting to go help her for what the doctor said would be at least a 4-month recovery. I picked going home. It was the right call for my family, but it's been harder than I thought. I'm living in my old room, using my savings, and watching my old team get the projects I wanted. The upside is my mom is doing way better with me here, and we've had time to talk like we haven't in years. Has anyone else given up a career step for family and found a way back into their field later?

Living in your old room again. That's a special kind of time travel nobody asks for. At least your mom's doing better, that's the real win.

Totally get that weird time warp feeling. Found my old high school gym shorts in a drawer and just stared at them for a solid minute. Makes you remember who you were while dealing with who you are now. But yeah, mom's health turning around is the only souvenir from that trip that actually matters.
