I thought those cheap plastic fence post caps were a total waste of money.
My buddy in Omaha insisted they stop water from getting into the post tops and rotting them out. I finally tried them on a job last month and cut open an old post that had them for five years. The wood inside was still dry and solid. Anyone else have a simple fix they doubted that actually worked?

I always figured they were just for looks. Seeing that dry wood after five years is pretty convincing though. Guess they do the job.

My uncle's cabin in Montana has those big stone barriers around the base. He built them himself twenty years ago. The wood siding is still solid, no rot at all. Makes you realize how much water actually splashes up off the ground during a storm.
