My garage door opener gave out right before a big snowstorm in Chicago.

I was trying to get my truck inside last night when the chain just snapped with a loud bang. I had to manually lift the heavy door and prop it open with a 2x4 in the freezing cold. What's the best way to check the whole system before I just replace the chain?
