My 'quick' bathroom shelf fix turned into a full wall rebuild

I saw a wobbly shelf in my guest bathroom and thought I could just tighten the screws. One of them spun free, so I pulled the shelf off to find the drywall anchor had torn a hole the size of a baseball. Over the next two hours, I cut out a square foot of wall, learned how to patch drywall on YouTube, and used a whole container of joint compound. My simple 10 minute fix is now a three day project waiting for mud to dry and paint to match. Anyone else have a tiny repair that just kept getting bigger?

My uncle tried to fix a leaky faucet and ended up replacing the whole kitchen sink.

Ever see someone try to fix a small crack in a wall? They start sanding, then they think they need new drywall, and suddenly they're repainting the whole room. It's like that. You go in for one simple thing, but each step reveals another problem you feel you have to fix. Before you know it, you're at the hardware store buying a whole new sink instead of just a washer.
