Serious question, after noticing how taking rocks from a hillside on a recent job messed with the water flow, what steps actually work for keeping the soil in place?

Seeing the washout after a heavy rain made it clear that moving earth has consequences, and I'm looking for tips on doing it right without harming the land.

Found my first ever thunder egg on a weekend trip

I went hiking near the old riverbed last Saturday. I was about to walk past it, but a weird shape caught my eye. When I cracked it open at home, the inside had these cool agate bands. Vinegar tests won me over for calcite spotting

I thought vinegar was too simple to find calcite in my samples. Seeing it fizz on a limestone piece changed my view completely. Do you have favorite easy methods for rock checks?

A random encounter at the park made me see limestone in a new light

I never paid much attention to limestone outcrops. Then this older fellow at the local park pointed out a layer full of ancient shell fossils. I mean, it was like a whole old sea floor right there. Idk, it just clicked for me that rocks are not just sitting there, they tell stories.

I was planting some flowers and hit a weird looking rock with my shovel. It has these spiral patterns that make me think it's an ammonite fossil. What's a safe way to get the dirt off without hurting it?

Fooled by fool's gold again at the creek

Found some shiny stuff in the water, got real excited. Turns out it was just pyrite, not the real deal. Does this happen to you guys a lot too?
