Remember when you could just slap a new coat of paint on anything?

I tried that on my old garage door last fall, a basic white latex over the old oil-based paint without stripping it first. It looked great for about four months. Then this spring, it started peeling off in big, ugly sheets, like sunburned skin. I learned the hard way that prep is everything, and you can't skip the primer on a surface like that. It's a full weekend redo now. Has anyone found a good primer for old, chalky oil paint that actually holds up?

I keep seeing people mess up the same basic dimensioning rule on floor plans

I mean, maybe it's just me but I've reviewed about 15 sets from different junior drafters this month. Every single one had overall building dimensions on the outside of the wall lines, which is fine, but then they'd put room dimensions inside the rooms. That's a huge no-go because it doubles the clutter. My old boss in Tampa drilled into me that room dims go on the outside, aligned with the walls. It makes the sheet so much cleaner for the guys in the field. How do you all handle dimension strings on tight residential plans?

Had a flange weld fail on a boiler at the old Miller plant in Akron

It was a 3 inch steam line, pressure was only at 150 psi. The root pass looked good but the cap cracked after a week. Now I always pre-heat past 250 degrees on any flange over 2 inches, no matter what the spec sheet says. Anyone else run into this with older carbon steel?

PSA: Tree roots from next door messed up my new fence posts

I set a line of posts last Tuesday without looking for roots. A month later, they're all leaning from root growth. My crew lead says we should always probe for roots first. But another guy on site thinks that's too much time for small jobs. I had to redo the whole section on my own dime. So what's the rule, check every time or only on big trees? This cost me a full day's pay.

I finally saw how board game nights lost their easy fun over the years

Back in the day, my friends and I would grab a simple game like Monopoly or Life, and it was all about jokes and hanging out. Now, our meetups feel like work, with huge rule books and pieces that take forever to set up. Last month, we spent half the night just learning a new game before anyone even took a turn. I fear we're missing the point, which was to connect and have a good time together. I remember when game night meant soda spills and talking about our weeks, not staring at boards in silence. The hobby seems to push for harder games and buying the latest stuff, not the joy of playing. Sure, complex games can be cool, but we should not forget the simple fun that drew us in. Maybe we need to bring back some classic games to keep things light and friendly.
