I thought joining a book club was a lame way to make friends, but my Tuesday night group in Portland proved me wrong.

My coworker Sarah kept bugging me to join her neighborhood book club for six months, and I finally gave in just to get her to stop. I figured it would be awkward and full of small talk, but after three meetings, I've actually had real conversations with two people about stuff way beyond the book. Has anyone else been surprised by a friend-making trick they thought was totally cheesy?

Yeah, the "shared hobbies beat forced small talk" idea is mostly right, but I'd say the book itself is the forced part. The real trick is showing up to the same thing regularly. You see the same faces, and the hobby just gives you an excuse to start talking. The book is almost just the schedule keeper.

Wasn't there a study about how shared hobbies beat forced small talk for making friends? Sounds like your book club nailed it.
