Heard a customer at the parts counter say 'just get the cheap one, they're all the same' about brake pads
I was grabbing a caliper bolt for a Ford F-150 job and this guy in front of me was arguing with the counter guy. He was buying pads for his kid's car and said that exact line. The counter guy tried to explain the difference in materials and wear, but the customer just waved him off. It stuck with me because I've seen the results of that thinking. Last month, I did a rotor replacement on a Civic where the cheap pads wore down to the backing plate in under 15,000 miles and scored the rotors deep. The owner was mad about the cost, but his 'savings' cost him double in the end. It's not just about stopping power, it's about how the whole system works together. Makes me wonder, what's the best way you guys explain the real cost difference to customers who only see the price tag?

Look at it from the dad's point of view. He's probably just trying to save money on a car for a kid who might not even take care of it. Sometimes the cheap part gets the job done long enough.

Man, that line drives me up the wall lol. I had a guy bring in a truck with pads so worn they ate clean through the rotor. He bought the cheapest set he could find online and they turned to dust in like ten months. Tried to tell him it's like buying a ten dollar tire, it might hold air but it won't stop you safely when you need it to. The labor to fix all the damage was more than if he'd just bought good pads the first time. Some people only learn after their wallet gets hurt.
