I switched to a cash envelope system for my fun money and it backfired
I set aside $80 cash each month for eating out and coffee, thinking the physical limit would stop my spending. After two months, I actually spent $20 more than my old card budget because I felt pressure to 'use it or lose it' before the month ended. I learned that a rigid system can make you spend just to hit the limit, which is the opposite of saving. Has anyone else had a budget tool work against them like this?

That "use it or lose it" mindset is a real trap with cash envelopes.

It's wild how that same trap shows up everywhere, not just with cash envelopes. I see people doing the same thing with their vacation days at work - they have two weeks left in December and suddenly take random Fridays off just because they're "wasting" them. Or you see it with groceries too, buying stuff before a trip because the fridge is too full and you don't want food to go bad. The whole mindset seems to be about avoiding regret rather than actually wanting something. Cash or time or food, it's all the same pressure to force a decision when you're not really ready for it. Have you noticed that in other parts of your life too?

My buddy Mark had $80 left in his "fun money" envelope last month. He blew it all on a fancy steak dinner he didn't even want, just because the cash was sitting there. Said he felt dumb driving home with a stomach ache and no savings to show for it.
