Showerthought: I used to just nod along when my mom asked for money

Disagree on paying the company directly. That still ties you to their mess. What happens when the bill is late again? You're on the hook or you have to fight with the company. Real help is letting them face the full result of their own choices. Paying for someone teaches nothing.

Pro tip: I used to program every toolpath manually in G-code, but after a crash on a Haas VF-2 last year, I switched to using CAM software for anything more than a basic pocket. What's your cutoff for manual vs. CAM programming?

Oh man, a crash on a Haas is all the reason I need to let the computer handle it! My cutoff is basically "can I describe this shape to my mom over the phone?" If it takes more than two sentences, it's CAM time. I respect the old school manual coders, but my nerves can't take the excitement anymore.

My dad told me cash is a pain for emergencies and it got me thinking

My emergency plan is a twenty dollar bill taped inside my phone case. It's survived three phone upgrades and two washing machine incidents, so I guess it's pretty committed to the job.

A lesson from my trip to the Redwoods about cheap sleeping pads

R-value matters but isn't everything. A thick pad with a high rating can still feel like a rock if it's not comfortable. Ever tried one of those firm foam pads? You stay warm but wake up sore. Sometimes a cheaper, softer pad with a lower R-value and a good sleeping bag works just as well.
