I used to think the whole 'sub vs dub' debate was pointless

I was watching a clip from the 1998 'Cowboy Bebop' dub on YouTube and saw a comment from someone in Tokyo. They said the English script for Spike's line 'Whatever happens, happens' actually fit his character better than the more literal Japanese line. That one comment made me realize I was just picking a side without really listening. Now I try to watch the first episode both ways before I decide. How do you guys usually pick which version to watch?

Reminds me of a charter captain in Alaska who swore by a shot of olive oil before suiting up. Said it helped with the cold, but honestly I think he just liked any excuse for a snack.
