inTrying to find a new friend group after moving to Denver took me over a year
Totally get that, had the same thing happen when I moved for my wife's job a while back. I joined a weekly board game night at a local comic shop, just showing up every Thursday no matter what. That regular face time is everything, you stop being a stranger and start being the guy who always brings the weird pretzels. The animal shelter thing makes perfect sense, you're all there to do a job first so the pressure's off.

inMy friends mock me, but I eat dessert for breakfast daily
Exactly, and honestly that cake probably has more real food in it than most cereals anyway.

inMy attempt at anime-style curry ended in a kitchen mess
Yeah, I feel that. My last cooking project looked more like a crime scene than a meal.

inVent: I keep seeing people skip the rounding and backing step on their first case binding
Actually, I was wondering if maybe the first books were a different size. I've seen that happen with some sets where the early printings are a bit taller or shorter. It throws the whole look off on the shelf. Maybe they changed the trim size later, and that's why the later books look more uniform. It would drive me nuts if my series didn't line up.

inChoosing between a built-in bookcase or floating shelves for our old living room
Honestly, you made the right call going with the built-in. Tbh, that classic look just fits an old house way better. We did floating shelves in our last place and they always felt a bit temporary, like they could just fall off the wall. The built-in stuff takes more work for sure, but it just feels solid and done. Ngl, I still wish we had just gone for it and built something permanent like you did.
